Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA) participated in the national Gender Forum yesterday in Harare hosted by the Zimbabwe Gender Commission. It was a platform to celebrate the gains of the past 10 years in which the Commission has existed, the positives strides taken towards equality such as :
A. appointments of women in key decision making roles: Prosectutor General ,Attorney General, women in cabinet , the youngest female chief in Hwange
B.legislative reforms : the marriages Act regulating child marriages, the protection of minors Act , sexual harassment policies , gender equality policy ,
C. changes at community level in terms of behaviors and shunning of harmful practises & social norms
It was also a time to focus on the clarion call of what more needs to be done to achieve an equal society
a. enactment of a gender equality law
b. equal opportunities in politics for men and women currently very few women are in parliament
c. addressing the scourge of gender based violence
