Yesterday, 11th September, 2020, the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN,) an Association of all Students from the 53 Law Faculties in all the Universities of the  Federal Republic of Nigeria, hosted her annual awards.

The award ceremony was part of the 2020 Convention of the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN). The Convention commenced on Wednesday the 9th day of September, 2020 at Zeus Paradise Hotel, Mabushi, Abuja and ended on Friday the 11th day of September, 2020 with a Grand Dinner and an Award ceremony. The Convention had in attendance students from various Faculties of Law across the country.

At the award ceremony, students of the University of Calabar were nominated for 7 categories:

1.) Nelly-Helen Ebruka as the Best female student. You will recall that Nelly represented the University of Calabar at the Manfred Lachs Space Law Competition in South Africa and Washington D.C in 2019 and along with her colleague, Augustine Ushie, won the award of Best Oralist at the Competition and emerged as runners up after beating McGill University, Canada at the semi finals.

2.) E. Etaba Agbor as President of the Year and as Social personality of the year. Etaba Agbor is the current Unical Lawsan President.

3.) Williams Emmanuel of the 4th year class was nominated in 2 categories. As Advocate of the year and as Zonal Director of the year. We recall that Emmanuel represented the Faculty and University of Calabar at this year’s John H. Jackson International Trade Law Moot Competition.

4.) Arinze Michael was nominated for Parliamentarian of the year.

5.) Andondiye Emmanuel was nominated for Sports Personality of the year

6.) The Faculty of Law was nominated as the Faculty of the year and

7.) The Unical Moot and Mock Society nominated as the Society of the year.

Out of the 7 categories, students of the University were nominated for, they carted away 3 of the very prestigious awards to wit:

Nelly-Helen Ebruka emerged as THE FEMALE LAW STUDENT OF THE YEAR; Etaba Agbor emerged as THE FACULTY PRESIDENT OF THE YEAR while the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar emerged THE FACULTY OF THE YEAR.

Winners emerged from a very vigorous process via votes, their profile strength, an interview process and the award requirements. Votes cast online accounted for 15% of the entire criteria, profile strength (35%), interview (30%), and award requirement (30%).

All awards were presented during the LAWSAN grand law dinner which held on the 11th day of September, 2020 at Zeus Paradise Hotel.

At the award ceremony, legal writer, Oliver Gift Chukkol of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, won the award of Legal writer of the year. He was also conferred with national honour of Officer of the Order of LAWSAN (OOL). Oliver Chukkol is a prolific writer who has written several erudite legal opinions. He was a Legal Intern at Olaniwun Ajayi LP, is a Young Member, Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), Content Developer at the Legal Concierge, Member, The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK),  Member, young Practitioners  Group at the Asian International Arbitration Centre, young member, International Council for Commerical Arbitration (ICCA), young member, Institute for Transnational Arbitration and a reporter with theNigerialawyers.

Nsinem Bob Essiet, a 100 level law student of the Rivers State University also won the award of Legal Rookie of the year. Nsinem, an academically sound young man with a passion for excellence is the founder of Penless Writer. He  won the Sen. Kelechi Omano’s  case senario online competition. He spiritedly participated in the Prof. O.V.C Okene’s moot/mock competition where he conscientiously exhibited skill in advocacy as the lead counsel for his team.

With the recent influence of technology on Nigeria Legal System, he collaborated with Toddle Lawyers Foundation to organize a training on how to use law pavilion to conduct online legal research.

As a  prolific writer, he has  written short stories, poems and law related articles. In a bid to garner interest in novel areas of law and help others do same, he convenes inspiring and didactic lectures on space law.
