The Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) Onitsha has dissociated itself from a human rights awards by Human Rights defenders Courtroom MAIL reports.
According to the branch of the NBA, publications were made purporting that the branch was organising an award in conjunction with the group.
The disclaimer dated the23rd of April 2018 signed by the Chairman Ikenna Chibuzor and Secretary of the branch Rapuluchukwu Nduka, is as follows

NOTICE OF DISCLAIMER
The attention of the Nigerian Bar Association, Onitsha Branch has been drawn to several newspaper publications inviting the Public to a Two- day Seminar and Human Rights awards presentation, organised by Human Rights Defenders Nig in conjunction with the Nigeria Bar Association, Onitsha Branch. The said event is billed to take place from 24th -25th April 2018.
The Nigeria Bar Association Onitsha Branch, notes that no decision was taken to embark on such event (in line with its age-long practice and procedure) nor was such an eventbrought to the notice of the body.
Consequently, the Onitsha Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, is constrained to disassociate itself from the said seminar and human rights awards presentation, and
further states as follows:
- The said program is the sole initiative of the “Human
Rights Defenders Nig”.
- The selection of the awardees were compiled by the
said “Human Rights Defenders Nig” without any input
from the Onitsha Branch of the Nigerian Bar
Association.
