The Mombasa Law Society  has responded to the statement  by Debra Ajwang condemning the imposition  of “contributions” on candidates for a debate towards the elections, Courtroom  Mail reports.

The statement  is as follows:

For clarity and in the interest of accuracy, it is important to address a few points raised regarding the upcoming Presidential Debate hosted by the Mombasa Law Society (MLS).

1. MLS is a society, not a Branch, and as the oldest Bar in East Africa (Est in 1911), it operates within its own governance framework. Decisions relating to its activities are made by the MLS Council and are not dependent on practices adopted elsewhere.

2. The amount referred to as a “hefty contribution” is Kshs 30,000, applicable to candidates vying for the position of President. This is not new. In 2024, MLS hosted debates for the President, Vice President, and JSC positions under the same arrangement and fee structure.

3. The contribution is intended to partially offset logistical costs, including venue hire, live streaming, and provision of water and lunch for attendees. Even with this contribution, the full cost of hosting the debate is not covered.

4. The decision to hold the debate and the applicable charges was a collective MLS Council resolution.

5. Participation in the debate is entirely voluntary and based on whether a candidate considers it valuable to present their manifesto to members in the Coast Region.

6. Our Chairperson and our Vice Chairperson are the Council Members you should reach out to.
