The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Dr. Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa, Former First Lady of the Republic of Zambia, and Managing Partner of Levy Mwanawasa & Company.
Born on 28th April 1963 at Kabwe General Hospital in Central Province, Dr. Mwanawasa was a pioneering figure in the legal field and a compassionate leader in society. As the founder of the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative, she demonstrated her unwavering commitment to uplifting the lives of many Zambians. Her tenure as First Lady from 2002 to 2008 was marked by her relentless advocacy for social justice and the empowerment of women.
A distinguished legal mind, Dr. Mwanawasa graduated with a law degree from the University of Zambia in 1995 and later co-founded and managed the law firm Levy Mwanawasa & Company. Her pursuit of excellence led her to attain an MBA in International Business from Edith Cowan University, and in 2009, she was honored with a Doctorate in Law from Pepperdine University.
As a dedicated member of LAZ, Dr. Mwanawasa’s passion for justice was evident in her advocacy for women’s rights, particularly through her active involvement in the LAZ Women’s Rights Committee. Her influence extended beyond our borders as she was also a member of the Association of Women Lawyers in the United Kingdom.
The entire legal fraternity joins the nation in mourning the loss of this remarkable woman. Her contributions to the legal profession and her unwavering commitment to the betterment of society will be remembered and cherished for generations to come.
