Hon. Justice Isaac Lenaola, judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya has been elected as the President of the International Association of Refugee and Migration Judges (IARMJ).
The election was held at the conclusion of the association’s annual conference and AGM which held at Radiation Hotel, San Jose, Costa Rica on 20 February 2020.
The theme of the conference was A New World On The Move: The Realities Of Irregular Mass Migration And The Challenges Facing Asylum And Immigration Judges Conference.
High Court Judge John Mativo was also elected as a member of the association’s supervisory council at the conference.
The association was formed in 1997 in Warsaw, Poland, to bring together appellate judges and adjudicators in the interpretation and application of the Refugee Convention of 1951 and it is committed to foisting recognition that protection from persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion is an individual right established under international law and that the determination of refugee status and its cessation should be subject to the rule of law.
The headquarters of the association is in Harlem, The Netherlands and has chapters in Europe, Africa, the Americas and Asia pacific.
