It is no longer news that the people of Edo State now live in fear occasioned by the incessant attacks on both lives and properties by men of the underworld.

What is more worrisome is the lackadaisical posture of the security personnel towards the situation.

Consequently, the Executive Councils of the Nigerian Medical Association, Edo State Branch (“NMA”), and the Nigerian Bar Association, Benin Branch (“NBA”) has held a joint press briefing on the fearsome state of security in the state.

Following the #EndSARS protests, the people of Edo State have lived under siege with no immediate respite in sight.

One would have expected that having barely recovered from the fear and psychological torture occasioned by the global pandemic, COVID 19, and while the people are counting their losses caused by the pandemic, the people of Edo State should at least sleep in peace. However, what we are witnessing now is totally incomprehensible.

The NMA and the NBA hereby call on the Chief Security Officer of the State, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki to please save the people of Edo State further agony by proactive measures.

We commend and appreciate the efforts of His excellency at curbing the menance thus far, but a lot still needs to be done in this regard as it appears these efforts have not yielded the much desired results.

We also call on the president of the country and the inspector General of police to immediately come to the rescue of Edo people and save them from the hands of these hoodlums who have continued to make us live in fear and uncertainties.

Suffices to state here that apart from the armed robbery, cultism and killing of innocent people, kidnapping has also increased.
For instance, reports have it that no fewer than 7 persons are kidnapped daily on the Benin-Auchi Road.

We would like to recommend that clearing of the bushes of about 50 metres from the road on both sides as was done for the Benin-Ore axis should be extended to the trouble spots on the Benin-Auchi axis as well as redeployment of security personnel.

As stake holders, NMA and NBA will continue to lead the advocacy for better life for the people of Edo State.

We are strongly convinced that the people’s governor, H.E. Godwin Obaseki will continue to do the needful to protect the lives and properties of Edo people.
