A Minnesota man accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife told responding officers he doesn’t have to “worry about a divorce now,” according to police.
Matthew Lynn Jansen, 46, was charged Monday with second-degree murder in the slaying of his wife, Mary Jo Jansen, at their Blaine residence, the Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported.
Police said the couple was in the process of a divorce and 46-year-old Mary Jo was set to move out Saturday.
But the night before the move, Matthew called 911 to report he killed his wife.
Officers arrived at the home and discovered the woman’s body on the floor of an upstairs bedroom. She appeared to have suffered two gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene, authorities said.
Her husband allegedly admitted to the fatal incident, telling detectives, “I can’t believe I did it.”
“I guess I don’t have to worry about a divorce now,” Matthew said, according to police.
He is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to appear in court next on March 18.
