The Abuja Branch (Unity Bar) of the Nigerian Bar Association has introduced palliative measures to cushion the effects that the lockdown, which was initiated to curtail the spread of Covid-19, may have on their young members financially.

The commendable move was made after the deadline for the payment of annual Bar Practising Fees for lawyers passed on March 31. The notice signed by the branch secretary reads in part:

Good evening Learned Senior Advocates, Elders, Seniors and Colleagues, I trust we are all keeping safe, it has been brought to the attention of the branch that there is an ongoing request for financial donations or donation of physical items to enable the branch assist members during the Covid-19 stay at home as mandated by the Federal Government, the branch hereby disassociates herself from the said request and further states that such request has at no time been issued by the NBA Abuja Branch (Unity Bar) Chairman in the person of Mr. Abimbola Kayode Esq, FICMC, FCIArb(UK).

It is also very important to state that the branch has at no time operated a Suntrust Bank account and also has no office at Machima Plaza, No. 2 Mambolo close off Mambolo Street, Wuse Zone 2 (the address for the said drop offs as mentioned).

The NBA Abuja Branch (unity bar) ably led by Mr. Abimbola Kayode Esq, FICMC, FCIArb(UK) is not calling on either Members of the branch or the General public to donate funds or put themselves at risk and in breach of the stay at home advisory of the Federal Government to drop off items at any address. As the safety of members of the branch is most important at a time like this.

The branch has made arrangements to provide some palliatives for her youngest members who fall into the category of 1-4 years post call. The branch has put together a financial palliative for her members within the post call bracket which will be credited directly into the bank account of the beneficiaries in view of the stay at home directive of the Government.

Consequently, members of the branch within the 1-4 post call year bracket are by this notice requested to on or before Monday the 6th of April 2020 forward evidence of payment of branch dues for the year 2020 and their bank account details to the branch email address: nbaabujabranchsecretariat@gmail.com or forward by WhatsApp to the branch Secretary Mr. Chidi Ezenwafor, Esq. MCArb on 07037434933 or the Branch Welfare Secretary, Mr. Uchenna Uche on 08038959090 to enable the branch transfer the said Palliatives to the beneficiaries.

Signed
