Fourteen sanitation offenders were on Saturday sentenced to manual labour by the state sanitation court presided over by Senior Magistrate P. C. Ndukwe sitting at Umuahia North Local Government Area headquarters.
Four out of the 17 persons, who were arrested were students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture. They were released on the account that they had a scheduled examination.
The 14 were asked to sweep, pick papers and cut grass.
Also speaking, the Transition Committee chairman of Umuahia North LGA, Barr. Kelechi Ezechukwu expressed his happiness over the turnout for the month’s exercise.
He revealed that he hired extra hands to ensure that the council headquarters was cleaned to serve as an example to others.
To further make the Umuahia metropolis cleaner, the council boss informed that he has even taken positive steps towards regulating the operations of council’s task force on unauthorized parking.
He disclosed that he has directed his deputy to place instructional signs for motorists as “one cannot be arrested without being directed where not to park”.
