An Abakaliki Magistrate’s Court has remanded a two-month-old baby alongside his mother, Chinyere Inya (34), father, Benard Inya (42) and a relative, Ugonma Egwu (38) in Abakaliki Federal Prisons over the alleged murder of one Sylvia Nwachi.
The accused persons, all natives of Ezi Nwachi Ndibe in Afikpo North Local Council of Ebonyi State, committed the act on October 26, this year.
They were charged on a two-count charge of murder punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.
The trial Magistrate, Nnachi Olughu, ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody while the court processes should be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution for appropriate legal advice. He, therefore, adjourned the matter till January 20, 2017.
Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Police Command yesterday arraigned a 37-year-old woman, Blessing Prince (a.k.a Mummy B) for allegedly selling a new born baby belonging to a 20-year-old man, Ifeanyichukwu Elem, at the sum of N100,000.
At the trial in the Federal High Court 2, Abakaliki, Blessing, who was re-arrested after being released by the police, was arraigned on a two-count charge of dealing in child trafficking and selling a four-day-old baby in charge No FHC/AI/H/2016.
The accused pleaded not guilty. The trial judge, Justice Akintayo Aluko, granted her bail with N2 million in like sum with a surety, who must be a civil servant of not less than Level 10.
Justice Aluko ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody if she did not fulfill the bail conditions and adjourned the matter to December 5, 2016 for trial.
